Original replacement parts can be very expensive and hard to find. Learn how to replace that adapter for a fraction of the cost of a new factory part. The AC adapter can be safely replaced with one from a totally different device if you know what to look for. Read on to learn how.
step 1
Inspect the old dead AC adapter looking for output information.
step 2
Write down the voltage in "volts DC" or "VDC".
TIP: 95% are DC but make sure it says DC, If it does not, its likely AC output.
step 3
Write down the polarity. This will be displayed as small graphic on the ac adapter showing + on the outside of the connector and - on the inside or the other way around. (+ inside & - outside)
step 4
Write down the current rating from the old adapter.
Tip: 1000 mA and 1A is the same thing.
The current rating is where you have some flexibility.
Current is drawn, not supplied. This means as long as the adapter is rated at the same or higher number, it will work fine.
IMPORTANT: Do not use an adapter rated at a lower number than the original adapter.
step 5
Measure the connector's inside and outside diameter.
Write down both figures in millimeters.
step 6
Inspect your box of saved AC adapters for a match.
The good news is that like-adapters often use like-connectors. If you find a match, test the fit between the device and the adapter-connector. If it fits, your done.
step 7
If you do not save AC adapters, visit your favorite auction web site. There will be dozens of choices at very low prices. If the seller does not show the information needed, email the seller and ask before buying.
Be sure to verify voltage, current, polarity, inside diameter, and outside diameter. Once your replacement adapter arrives in the mail, double check the numbers to be sure it is what you order. If all goes well, your favorite device will be up and running and you will have saved as much as 80% of the cost of an original factory part.
